Bad Penny Guitar Lesson | Rory Gallagher Guitar Tutorial With Tabs
In this Electric Guitar lesson James breaks down the three main sections of Bad Penny by Rory Gallagher. This video breaks the Guitar Tabs down note by note.
The song is in Dm and really leans into the Aeolian natural minor feel using open chords in the introduction and bar chords in the bridge. The lead guitar riff comes in at various points of the song and often links to an improvised section in D minor.
The main riff is based in the 4th position of the D natural minor scale or Aeolian mode. This can be played in 2 other places on the neck but I have reason to believe this is where Rory plays it on the original recording.
The intro chords and Verse part is a 2 bar progression that goes D minor, F Major 7, C major then returning to D minor with 2 beats each. Watch out for the little figures around the F and the C chords. The decoration is achieved by playing around with the notes in the middle of the chords.
Finally the bridge uses mainly car chords with a G chord on beat 4 of the first bar. When you get to the B flat chord it builds in the penultimate bar and resolves to a C before a beat and a halves rest.
Rory Gallagher is one of the best guitarists of that generation and in my opinion doesn't get enough credit.
Make sure you are bending enough and the lead part and use vibrato whenever you get the opportunity.
Rory is best known for using a 1961 Fender Stratocaster and Vox AC30’s although in researching this video i have seen him use Marshal twin combos. More than likely JCM 800 combos.
Because of this I used the closest things I had to hand. That being a ‘62 reissue 3 color sunburst Fender Stratocaster with a Rosewood neck finished in Nitrocellulose lacquer paired with a 65’ reissue Princeton and a Boss OD2 (the yellow one) I think it's fairly close!
I hope this lead guitar tutorial was useful and was taught at a pace that you can follow. Godspeed!
