Liszt composed three Liebestraume (or Dreams of Love) in 1850 when he was 39 years old. They are nocturnes and have a dreamy, romantic mood appropriate to the title. Liebestraume No. 3 in A-flat major with its familiar melody is the most popular of the set. The accompanying poem by F. Freiligrath begins: "O love! O love, so long as e'er thou canst, or dost on love believe; The time shall come, when thou by graves shalt stand and grieve...."
