This week, we’re digging into one of the most recognizable Brazilian tunes ever written — Mas Que Nada by Jorge Ben. While it’s not always treated as a traditional jazz standard, this tune has become a staple in Latin jazz, Brazilian jazz, and crossover jazz repertoire, appearing in countless recordings and live performances.

At its core, Mas Que Nada sits in F minor and blends a driving samba groove with jazz-influenced harmony, creating a unique hybrid that challenges bass players to balance rhythmic precision with harmonic awareness.

For bassists, this tune is a masterclass in Brazilian bass line construction. In this video, we break down how to approach the groove from multiple angles:
* How to build a foundational samba bass line using roots and fifths
* How samba relates to (and differs from) bossa nova bass playing
* Ways to create variation using register, rhythmic placement, and delayed motion
* How to transition into a more jazz-oriented approach with chord tones, chromatic passing tones, and syncopation
* How to scale your line back to support a melody-driven or vocal setting

We also take a look at the form (A–B–C–B / 40 measures) and some of the key harmonic ideas, including the recurring ii–V motion and i7–V7#9 movement that give the tune its identity.

I’m playing this on six-string bass, but everything here is completely transferable to four-string bass guitar or upright bass. The notation and tablature are on screen — play along and start building your own approach to this essential Brazilian groove.
