Welcome to episode 2 of my series Funk Faves. In this lesson we are looking at one of my favourite funky intros of all time from the master Nile Rodgers. This intro is from the Diana Ross track I'm Coming Out that Nile co-wrote and performed on. The track was also recorded by Chic but it is the original Diana Ross version being covered here.
This is an absolute funk rhythm masterclass from Nile as he repeats the same chord progression 8 times at the start of the song but each time there are rhythmic variations! He gives it a real live jamming vibe that sounds so natural in the context of the song. We'll go through all 8 variations to see what is happening. Even if this song is not to your liking, I would encourage studying it as there are so many 16th note variations that you can learn and adapt into your own playing. So much fun to be had :)
